Sumer And Egypt The Pioneers Of Civilization - 1226 Words
Sumer and Egypt were two of the first civilizations established in ancient history, the Sumerians being the pioneers of civilization. Each of the civilizations settled on fertile lands and established political, religious, and economic standards of their own. The Sumerians created a system of writing called cuneiform, developed a theocratic government, established an agricultural-based economic system, and created a polytheistic religion. Because the land was flat and marshy with few hills or mountains, Sumer had little protection from a military standpoint. The environment of Egypt was the polar opposite of Sumer. The Egyptians were surrounded by desert to prevent invasion, yet gifted with plenty of fertile land along the Nile. Thisâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦To the west of Sumer, Egypt was developing as its own civilization. Egypt had a strong geographical advantage compared to Sumer. Cliffs and deserts encased the land which reduced the worries of invasion, thus creating a bett er outlook on life for its citizens. Egypt differed from Sumer and the Tigris and Euphrates in that the Egyptians could predict when the Nile River would flood. The river supplied Egypt with fertile land every year and an excellent medium for trade and communication. Like the Sumerian city-states, Egypt was run by a king, also referred to as a pharaoh. The pharaoh was not only a leader in bureaucracy but a religious figure as well. ââ¬Å"Egyptian politics tended to be more authoritarian as well as centralized, for city-states in the Mesopotamian style, though often ruled by kings, also provided the opportunity for councils and other participatory institutions.â⬠However, climate change and development in cities of Nubia diminished the power of the pharaoh in Egypt, resulting in the collapse of the Old Kingdom. By 2350B.C.E, Sargon had conquered all of the city-states in Sumer and began the acquisition of the rest of Mesopotamia. He appointed officials to rule all of the citie s and collected taxes to create an even larger political unit: the first known empire. Sargon was also accredited with the establishment of the first dynasty. Sargon made his empire imperialistic by initiating a program

Henry David Thoreau does this by personifying the moon as a lady and showing that his 10 eve for her helps him see all his bulky abundant problems seem small and limited. His love for the moon, lady, helps him realize that life is valuable and that thereââ¬â¢s no reason to abhor the life he I ivies. Moreover, Henry David Thoreau talks about how the moon, lady, ââ¬Å"does not wane, but m y fortune,ââ¬â¢ which her rays do not bless,/ my wayward path declined soon,/ but she shines not the lessâ⬠(Thoreau 71 0) in order to show the contrast between his frightful life and the power an d beauty of the moon. Henry David Thoreau uses tone shift in every other line in order to con trash himself with the moon, he uses a disconsolate tone when talking about his life in order to show that he is weak. Afterwards, he shifts to a omnipotent tone to describe the powerfulness s of the moon, lady, and that compared to him she will never become weak. He talks about how s he does not ââ¬ËWaneâ⬠; therefore, she does not fade, but he then he talks about that his fortune does fade making him seem powerless. He also talks about how she does not bring luck to his fortune e and that he took the wrong path that will soon be declining and bringing adversity to his life. La stay, he talks about how none of that matters because the moon does not shine any less; t wherefore, she gives him hope that one day everything will turn out okay. The contrast is shown aft r every other line because he goes from describing his calamitous life to describing the influent al light of the moon to show how strong her light and beauty is. The moon is a reminder that t beauty still exist even in the darkest moments of ones life and his love towards the moon, lady , helps him see beyond his problems and the life he abhors. Likewise, Henry David Thoreau use of tone shift conveys that no matter h owe much hate and disgust you feel towards a person, thereââ¬â¢s always going to be a spark Of love u ender all that loath. Indeed, Indeed, I Cannot Tellâ⬠is a dramatic poem about a man and a choice between lover or hate. The man starts of hating a certain person and doesnââ¬â¢t want to believe the at he truly loves them. He thinks that loving the person is some kind of sin and that he is not al lowed to love. Time starts to pass by and no matter how much he tries to hate the person 10 eve strikes him every time. He finally realizes that he can not truly hate the person no matter how much he tires. He figures out that love can not be hidden and that love will always find a away b ace to him no matter how much he tries to push it away. Hate can not always be a disguise f or love because love will always be able to break through the cracks of hate and when it does I can not be controlled. In addition to, Henry David Thoreau tone shift helps the reader s e the confusion Henry has about whether to love or hate the person. The tone shift is mostly n deiced in lines seven through twelve when Henry starts to talk about how he, ââ¬Å"O, I hate thee with a hate/ That would fain, annihilate;/ Yet sometimes against my will,/ My dear friend, love the still. If it were a treason to our love,/ And a sin to God above,â⬠(Thoreau 712). Henry uses a tone of abhorrence when talking about how much he hates the person, but then shifts to a tone o f affection to show owe much he wants to love the person. At first Henry starts talking about how he hates the person with so much hate that it will soon destroy him. He then shifts to talk Eng about how sometimes against his will he still loves them. Lastly, he shifts back to talking a bout how loving the person is a betrayal and a sin to the God above. By using tone shift the re adder can tell that Henry does truly want to love the person, but he is afraid to because he believe sees its a sin to love a person so much. Therefore, he tries to use hate as a disguise in order to make e himself believe that he doesnââ¬â¢t not love the person. He soon sees the reality that he canââ¬â¢t hate the e person and that his love towards the person is too strong to be hidden; therefore, he agrees that he does love the person. He knows that itââ¬â¢s not right to love the person, but with hate comes 10 eve and eventually love starts to take over uncontrollably and thereââ¬â¢s nothing that can stop it. Furthermore, in both ââ¬Å"The Moonâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Indeed, Indeed, I Cannot Tellâ⬠Henry David Thoreau uses contradictory tone to portray that that love will always dominate hate, b UT at the same time he gives the poems their own unique styles. Thoreau poems both illustrate t e power of love, but in two different scenarios. Thoreau use of contradictory tone in ââ¬Å"The Mo onâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Indeed, Indeed, I Cannot Tellâ⬠illustrates not only how love can overshadow hate, but also how much of an impact love has in peoples lives. Moonâ⬠illustrates a man with a life full I of faults and his love for the moon, in this case a lady. Henry illustrates the impact of love BBC reading a scenario where the love Of a man towards a lady, moon, helps him loss sight Of all his t rubles in life. He makes the man go through many problems, but he doesnââ¬â¢t let the man lose t he thought of love. In he end the love he has towards the moon, woman, helps the man realize that no matter what situation he is in his love will never alter. By only focusing on the good, in this case love, the man realizes that life is precious and that thereââ¬â¢s not a reason to abhor it no matter what challenges are being faced. While ââ¬Å"The Moonâ⬠illustrated that love is powerful by using nature, ââ¬Å"Indeed, Indeed, I Cannot Tellâ⬠illustrates the power of love by making It simple e and using a man that just simply believes he hates another person. ââ¬Å"Indeed, Indeed, I Cannot Tellâ⬠is also a poem written by Henry David Thoreau that emphasizes the power of love. Indeed, Indeed, I Cannot Tellâ⬠helps the reader picture ho w love overshadows hate, but in a different scenario. In the poem thereââ¬â¢s a man that starts out hating a person with a passion, but the hate turned out to be a disguise for his love to wards the person. The man talks about how the person disgust him and how he doesnââ¬â¢t know w hats easier to either love or hate them. Throughout the poem he keeps trying to convince himself that he hates the person and that thereââ¬â¢s no possible way that he could ever love them. As the poem starts to come to an end he admits that he really does love the person, but it wasnââ¬â¢t his intent ion to love them. The poem shows that everyone has hidden love and that hate only occurs who en love is present because no one ever wants to believe that a person could love someone with so much passion; therefore, hate is a disguise for love. Henry David Thoreau used different see Marion in the poems in order to warn people that love is to be taken seriously, but he used contract actors tone in both of the poems to get the message out. By creating different scenarios, but using g the same tone Henry David Thoreau helps the reader gain some knowledge on how love imp acts different people in different ways. In conclusion, different people have different experiences, but love has the same amount of power. Some people are afraid of the thought of love because maybe they ha eve experienced love in a different way than others. Love can seem like a bad thing but if love is ex perceived in different ways it will leave different scars. Some scars might be bad and want to be forgotten, but they are there as a reminder of the mistakes that donââ¬â¢t need to be repeated. Other scars are there as a reminder of how much of a difference love can cause and to show the b tackle that come with love. Henry David Thoreau flawlessly takes his experiences with love and hate and turns them into different scenarios to show the audience that love and hate can be experienced in different ways. In doing so, he is able to create the image that love will not alt err and that it will always stay same under every single circumstance. Henry David Thoreau, a p helicopter, chooses to take love and hate and show his audience that just because problems late r love doesnââ¬â¢t. He helps his audience realize that hate is powerful, but hate really never is felt. How to cite Henry David Thoreau Final, Papers

Nymphs Reply To Shepherd Essays - Christopher Marlowe,
Nymph's Reply To Shepherd The poem "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd", is a look into the mind of a realistic (or some may even say pessimistic) person. It was written as a response to the more idealistic poem, " The Passionate Shepherd to His Love", by Christopher Marlowe. "The Passionate Shepherd..." is the story of a man trying to convince the lady he loves to spend the rest of her life with him. He describes the happiness that will surround them and the beauty they will live with the rest of their lives, " The shepherd swains shall dance and sing For thy delight each May morning-". The theme of the poem is essentially to woo the shepherd's love to come live with him. Many responses were written to this poem, but the most famous came from Sir Walter Raleigh. Raleigh wrote "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd". Sir Walter Raleigh actually became famous for colonizing the Americas and for being the founder of a settlement in Virginia. With this response to Marlowe's poem he also became a poet. He wrote the best response to Marlowe's idealistic shepherd. In the first stanza the nymph (otherwise known as the shepherd's love) begins to state an argument against the shepherd's views. She says that if their love would always stay young, and their world would never change then she would gladly spend the rest of her life with him. After saying this, the nymph explains in detail what the reality of things would be if they spent their lives together. The second stanza begins by saying that in time the flocks of sheep would leave the field. The rivers would grow to be more violent and smash against the rocks, instead of flowing gently. The nightingale would stop singing, and soon after the complaints in their relationship would start. Stanzas three through five continue the nymph's description of what would really occur, if she lived with him. Eventually, the flowers would wither away, and winter would come. The spring's "honey tongue" would appear, but it would only be followed by fall (which they saw as sorrow-filled season). The gowns, shoes, skirts, and everything else the shepherd said she would have also would fade and disappear in time. Everything he offered her such as a belt made of straws and ivy buds, coral clasps, and ivory studs, could not convince her to spend her life with him. The point she tries to put across in these stanzas is everything she owned and all that they were surrounded by would change. "The Passionate Shepherd..." only speaks of the wonderful things, and he only see the beauty and life of spring. The nymph smartly reminds him that after a beautiful season winter will eventually arrive. In the last stanza of the poem, the tone changes a little. The nymph says how her opinion might change if things were different. If their youth and their youthful stage of love could last forever, and it was certain that their joy would never die; these offers would move her to changing her mind. She basically states that she would spend the rest of her life with him, if all that he said were true. In this last stanza, you see the nymph back down from her argument a bit. She agrees that it would be nice for things to stay the same, but they never do. This is what seems to be the theme of the poem. Although she would love to live the way the shepherd says, she realizes (and tries to make him realize through the poem) that things could never stay that perfect. This argument is stated wonderfully through the imagery and language used in the poem. In "The Nymph's Reply..." the images used let the reader almost see what this nymph is talking about. " When rivers rage and rocks grow cold, And Philomel becometh dumb;" through this image the audience can picture the cold water of the river crashing against the rocks, and the nightingale stop singing. "The flowers do fade, and wanton fields To wayward winter reckoning yields;" in these images the iciness of winter seems to be killing everything off. Personification is also used to make the images clearer. " A honey tongue, a heart of gall, Is fancy's spring, but sorrow's fall." This line personifies spring and fall by giving them human attributes such as a tongue and a heart, as well as making them fancy and sorrowful. The images in this poem are what make

Hemingway Essays - Ernest Hemingway, Free Essays, Term Papers
Hemingway Essays - Ernest Hemingway, Free Essays, Term Papers Hemingway ERNEST HEMINGWAY BIOGRAPHY On the date of July 21, 1899 Ernest Hemingway, a now known brilliant writer, was born. Hemingway was conceivably the only writer to achieve the combination of international celebrity and literary stature in the twentieth century. Hemingway was brought up in the village of Oak Park, Illinois, close to the prairies and woods west of Chicago. Both here and in Michigan, he could explore, camp, fish and hunt with his father, Dr. Clarence Hemingway. In Chicago he would attend concerts, operas and visit art museums with his mother, a musician and an artist. Hemingway attended Oak Park and River Forest High School, where he was an active writer. He wrote articles, poems and stories for the schools publications largely based on his own experiences. The year Hemingway graduated he quickly secured a job with the Kansas City Star. There he received a writing style sheet that instructed: Use short sentences. Use short first paragraphs. Use vigorous English. (Parshall 1). These were rules he never forgot to incorporate into his works to get to the heart of a story. The following year he entered World War I as a volunteer with American Red Cross ambulance unit as a driver. There he was wounded near the Italian/Austrian front. Hospitalized, he fell in love with his nurse, who later called off their relationship. After World War I, Hemingway returned to northern Michigan to read, write, fish, and later to work for the Toronto Star in Canada. In 1921 married his first wife and moved to Paris. In Paris he continued to write for the Toronto Star as a foreign correspondent. During his stay in Europe through the 1920s, Ernest was influenced by eccentric writers like Gertrude Stein and Ezra Pound their literary compression. Hemingways use of these methods in short stories and novels that captured the attention of critics and the public. In the 1930s, he turned to writing for causes, including democracy as he knew it in the Spanish Civil War and World War II. In each conflict he sought support for the side he favored. But he insisted on impartially describing the truth of both wars, which he knew from firsthand experience. In the years following World War II, many critics said Hemingways best writing was past. He surprised many of the critics when the novel, The Old Man and the Sea, was published.. This work led to his Pulitzer Prize in 1952. Two years later he received the Nobel Prize for his powerful, style-making mastery of the art or modern narration (Griffin 1) for The Old Man and the Sea. Hemingways years following these awards saw few works as successful as his novel or earlier writings. Hemingway was devastated that he could no longer write as he once did. During 1961 Hemingway, troubled by high blood pressure and mental depression, received shock treatments during two long confinements at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He died July 2, 1961 at his home in Ketchum, Idaho, as a result of self-inflicted gunshot wounds and was buried in Ketchum. But as he had hoped, his writing lives on. His works continue to sell very well and are translated in an amazing variety of languages around the world. HEMINGWAY HERO For Ernest Hemingway, the secondary world which he constructed in his many stories and novels served as a mirror to reflect his beliefs about the world in which he lived (Relations to Fact Through Fiction 1). Even though he reflected his beliefs in his works he never portrayed himself as the hero. Instead Hemingway created a hero that followed the same general code in all of his works. We generally, call this man the code herothis because he represents a code according to which the hero, if he could attain it, would be able to live properly in the world of violence, disorder, and misery to which he has been introduced and which he inhabits. The code hero, then, offers up and exemplifies certain principles of honor, courage, and endurance which in a life of tension and pain make a man, as we say, and enable him to conduct himself well in the losing battle that is life. The Hemingway hero of The Snows of Kilimanjaro is Harry. Harry is self pitying and views his present diseased state as the culmination of poor choices and false, convenient values. However, through final, confrontation with his own mortality, he achieved self-redemption. In The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber Francis is the Hemingway hero because he had courage and

Hinglish - Definition, Etymology and Examples
Hinglish s Hinglish is a mix of Hindi (the official language of India) and English (an associate official language of India) that is spoken by upwards of 350 million people in urban areas of India. (India contains, by some accounts, the largest English-speaking population in the world.) Hinglish (the term is a blend of the words Hindi and English) includes English-sounding phrases that have only Hinglish meanings, such as badmash (which means naughty) and glassy (in need of a drink). Examples and Observations In a shampoo advertisement currently playing on Indian television, Priyanka Chopra, the Bollywood actress, sashays past a line of open-top sports cars, flicking her glossy mane, before looking into the camera and saying: Come on girls, waqt hai shine karne ka!Part English, part Hindi, the linewhich means Itââ¬â¢s time to shine!is a perfect example of Hinglish, the fastest growing language in India. While it used to be seen as the patois of the street and the uneducated, Hinglish has now become the lingua franca of Indiaââ¬â¢s young urban middle class . . ..One high-profile example is Pepsiââ¬â¢s slogan Yeh Dil Maange More! (The heart wants more!), a Hinglish version of its international ââ¬Å"Ask for more!â⬠campaign.(Hannah Gardner, HinglishA Pukka Way to Speak. The National [Abu Dhabi], Jan. 22, 2009)Prepaid mobile phones have become so ubiquitous in India that English words to do with their userecharge, top-up and missed callhave become common, too. Now, it seems, th ose words are transforming to take on broader meanings in Indian languages as well as in Hinglish.(Tripti Lahiri, How Tech, Individuality Shape Hinglish. The Wall Street Journal, Jan. 21, 2012) The Rise of Hinglish The language Hinglish involves a hybrid mixing of Hindi and English within conversations, individual sentences and even words. An example: She wasà bhunno-ing theà masala-sà jubà phoneà ki ghuntee bugee. Translation: She was frying the spices when the phone rang. It is gainingà popularityà as a way of speaking that demonstrates you are modern, yet locally grounded.New researchà by my colleagues . . . has found that while the hybrid language is not likely to replace English or Hindi in India, more people are fluent in Hinglish than they are in English. . . .Our data revealed two important patterns. First, Hinglish speakers cannot speak monolingual Hindi in settings which require only Hindi (like our interview scenario)this confirms reports from some speakers that their only fluency is in this hybrid Hinglish. What this means is that, for some speakers, using Hinglish is not a choicethey cannot speak monolingual Hindi, nor monolingual English. Because these Hinglish spe akers are not fluent in Hindi, they are not likely to undergo language shift to monolingual Hindi.Second, bilinguals adjust their speech towards Hinglish when they talk to Hinglish speakers. Over time, the number of Hinglish speakers is growing by adopting speakers from the bilingual community who lose the need to use either language monolingually.(Vineeta Chand, The Rise and Rise of Hinglish in India.à The Wireà [India], February 12, 2016) The Queens Hinglish A testimony is the average north Indians response to the language of the conquering British. They transformed it into Hinglish, a pervasive mishmash beyond state control that has spread from below so that even ministers no longer aspire to imitating the Queen. Hinglish boasts of airdashing to a crisis (famine or fire) lest newspapers accuse them of being on the backfoot. A vivacious mixture of English and native tongues, Hinglish is a dialect pulsating with energy and invention that captures the essential fluidity of Indian society.(Deep K Datta-Ray, Tryst With Modernity. The Times of India, Aug. 18, 2010)[Hinglish has] been called the Queens Hinglish, and for good reason: its probably been around since the first trader stepped off the ships of the British East India Company in the early 1600s. . . .You can hear this phenomenon for yourself by dialing the customer service number for any of the worlds largest corporations. . . . While once considered the resort of the uneducated or the expatriatedthe so-called ABCDs or the American-Born Confused Desi (desi denoting a countryman), Hinglish is now the fastest-growing language in the country. So much so, in fact, that multinational corporations have increasingly in this century chosen to use Hinglish in their ads. A McDonalds campaign in 2004 had as its slogan What your bahana is? (Whats your excuse?), while Coke also had its own Hinglish strapline Life ho to aisi (Life should be like this). . . .
